Focusing on the area of "Le Roste" in southern Tuscany, the work DOPO (Italian for ‘afterwards, later’) explores this landscape, a remnant of copper mining in a region now predominantly associated with tourism. The former discarded mounds of chalcopyrite have been eroded over time, transforming into narrow ridges of stones and fine, compacted silt.
In the video, these ridges string together into a rust-red sea. Gradually, they are layered with an animation that attempts to map the structures of the "Roste", until not only the video but also the documented characteristics seem to take on a life of their own.
The accompanying graphics on fabric visualises the concept of the work through research notes and conceptual sketches: Terms used in the context of erosion and mining often combine everyday words to form new, almost contradictory meanings, e.g. UNTER-TAGE (‘under day / under ground’, GLÜCK-AUF ‘luck up, Good luck’).
As in the ‘Roste’, the past is unearthed, eroded and then buried once more. Loss is a universal experience, and the question remains: „E dopo?“ (Whats next?)
